The EEG shows a specific pattern — a dip in the right hemisphere, then a surge — that appears nearly a third of a second before the subject reports understanding why something is funny. His brain has already laughed. He is about to catch up.
Your Ribs Get There First
The intercostal muscles between your ribs begin their rhythmic preparation roughly 200 milliseconds before conscious recognition of humor arrives. Sophie Scott's neuroimaging work at University College London caught this in real time: bodies literally shake with laughter before minds recognize anything as funny. The prefrontal cortex is still parsing syntax. The chest has already started its work.
But the body does not just anticipate the punchline — it helps write it. Researchers at Radboud University found that artificially activating the zygomatic major, the smile muscle, makes neutral statements seem funnier. Not happier. Funnier. Wire that muscle into contraction with a small electrical charge, hold a straight face otherwise, and the joke still lands harder. The physical shape of your face is casting a vote on what qualifies as comedy, and it votes before you have weighed in. Your cheeks have opinions your judgment has not yet formed.
Comedians Taste Lightning Before It Strikes
Sarah Silverman knows a joke will kill three words before the punchline because her mouth floods with the taste of pennies. Other comics report similar tells: a metallic tang, a tightening behind the sternum, a specific quality of silence that feels different from dead air. They are not reading the room. They are tasting their own adrenaline.
The sympathetic nervous system, monitoring the audience's held breath, releases catecholamines that shift saliva pH. That copper taste is endogenous epinephrine hitting taste buds before the brain has finished its assessment. The strange part is what this does to accuracy. In a study of stand-up timing, comics who reported these pre-laugh tastes were markedly better at predicting which jokes would land than those relying on conscious read of the room. The body's chemical preview outperformed deliberate judgment. They were not psychic. Their endocrine system was running analytics their conscious mind had not caught up to.

Caspar Addyman's measurements at Birkbeck's Baby Lab found infant laughter follows the same neural pathway as the startle response, but inverted. Where startle contracts, laughter releases. Same circuit, opposite direction. This suggests laughter began as anti-startle — instead of freezing when reality breaks its own rules, the body celebrates the break. We are wired to find physics violations physically pleasurable, long before we have language for irony or wit. Every joke since is elaborate decoration on this older program: the body applauding when causality trips over itself.
Your Grandmother's Timing Lives in Your Throat
A woman in a Cornell acoustic study had never met her paternal grandmother, who died when the woman's father was twelve. Spectrographic analysis found something uncanny anyway: their laughs shared an identical 0.7-second suspended pause before the explosive phase, a pattern that appears in only a small fraction of recorded laughs. She carried her grandmother's rhythm without ever hearing it once.
This is not simply acoustic mimicry passed down through a shared household. UCLA twin studies found identical twins raised apart share laugh timing to within 50 milliseconds, while fraternal twins raised in the same house can vary by 200 milliseconds or more. The rhythm is written closer to the genes than to the environment. What feels like spontaneous mirth is closer to choreography composed before birth — sheet music in the cells, performed without ever being read.
Three weeks after his session in McGraw's lab, the test subject sits at dinner, telling friends about watching his own brain laugh before he did. Mid-sentence, he notices it: that familiar dip in attention, like missing a stair in the dark. His body is preparing something. This time, instead of waiting for understanding to arrive, he does something different. He stops talking. Looks at his friends. Says nothing.
The silence stretches. Two seconds. Three. His chest has not started shaking yet. The punchline has not arrived, and may never arrive — there was no joke, only the shape of one. But everyone at the table is already beginning to smile, their bodies responding to a joke that does not exist yet, in a space where the waiting has become the comedy. He still does not know what is funny. Neither do they. Their ribs do not seem to mind.
